My 3G iPhone becomes a 2G iPhone, soon just an iPod Touch?
14 July, 2008 by AndrewThe WiFi which was working fine yesterday refuses to find any access points today. Tried switching it off and on, resetting network settings, restoring the whole phone, everything. Won’t find a thing.
So I booked it into the Genius Bar at the Apple Store in Regent Street, London and jumped on the tube.
I then noticed that the phone would not find a 3G signal, that seemed to have packed up in sympathy (at this rate I’m going to end up with an expensive contract iPod Touch!).
They ran some diagnostics on it (after asking if I had done anything “creative” with it, which I took to mean unlocking, so no I hadn’t) and while the scan showed nothing wrong, they agreed the WiFi was definately not working. They thought it might be the antenna coming loose, but changed their mind as the 3G had also given up the ghost and that uses a different antenna… The worst part is that as I bought it from Carphone Warehouse (it was an upgrade otherwise I would have gotten it from the Apple Store) they can’t swap it with a new one off the sales shelf, they can only do it as a warranty replacement and take one of of the warranty spares pool, of which there are none left. So they had to order me a new one for the warranty pool. They did suggest I go back to Carphone Warehouse as they would be legally obliged to swap it out but I figured the chances of them having *any* stock at all was slim at best so opted to let Apple get me one instead. They said they’d call me when they get one in.
On a side note, there are still queues outside the store for iPhones…
