Apple OSX Leopard – The next day…

28 October, 2007 by Andrew

I spent the majority of yesterday reinstalling all my apps on my new Leopard powered system.

It all went well except I discovered that Super duper is not yet compatible with Leopard although it should be shortly.
This is important as Time Machine does not make bootable clones of your system (as far as I can tell). It’s fine for file recovery and turning back the clock but less useful if you get a hard drive failure for example…

Some further observations:

I find the stacks quite useful for my downloads, of which there were many yesterday as I downloaded and reinstaled all my apps).

I am getting used to the new dock but to be honest it’s not adding anything to the experience, it’s purely an aesthetic change which seems silly. I do hopw Apple are not going to start putting form before function in their software. It’s bad enough when they do it with their hardware by hiding all the USB ports around the back…

I had noticed that Apple have gone mad for this coverflow concept, they make a big deal about it on the iPhone, the new iPods and now in Finder. I never saw the point of it in its original iTunes introduction as you can’t easily see what albums are coming up as you scroll through them so I find it easier to spot by scrolling through the iTunes song window or by using spotlight. The same applies to the new new Finder, it’s pure eye candy imho and offers no real benefit I can see, eg finding what you want quicker.

I really dislike the new icons too, particularly the ones in application toolbars like Mail. They are too small and natty looking.

Usability wise I think Apple are making no headway as the new features that offer some tangibile benefit (eg Time Machine) are balanced out by pointless stuff that gets n the way…

I just wish they’d switch back to requiring you to grab the application title bar to move a window instead of clicking and holding anywhere on the window.
If I had a dollar for every time I had moved a window instead of dragged a scroll bar…
