Are these new glossy LCD screens a problem?
24 August, 2007 by AndrewThere’s been a fair bit of discussion online regarding the pro’s and con’s of glossy screen computers.
For the uninitiated LCD screens have always been matte, ie they have no shine to them. If you own an LCD television or monitor take a look at it, especially switched off, it’s a dull finish.
Recently laptops and iPods etc have started using glossy screens, basically a piece of glass or plastic in front of the screen to give it a glossy shine. This makes blacks look blacker and colours more vibrant.
The downside is that anything shiney reflects light. Remember big old CRT monitors or televisions? If you placed it opposite a window you would see the window in the screen.
I went to my local Apple Store to check out the screens for myself (as I have been considering upgrading my G5 iMac to something faster) as I was concerned about the reflections. Although the MacBook Pro is available with either a glossy screen or a matte screen, I went with the old fashioned matte as I find it easier on the eye.
I have to say I have serious concerns about the new glossy screens as the reflections at the Apple Store were terrible. Now, to be fair the Apple Store is very brightly lit which makes the problem worse, but even so I don’t think I can live with a screen that is this distracting:
