What every gadget needs. A protective shield!
21 July, 2007 by AndrewI’ve never been one for putting my phone in a case and I hate having to do so with my iPod or camera. I put up with the inconvenience because like everybody else I don’t want my expensive gadgets scratched, especially the screens.
I’ve noticed that some gadgets, notably my previous smartphone, now come with a clear protective film for the screen but they’ve always looked awful due to being too noticeable and they’re too thin to offer any real protection.
I heard good things about a new entry into the market and decided to check them out. “Invisible Shield” is not just any old clear plastic film, it’s used to protect the rotor blades on military helicopters and it’s proper strong. Apart from a slightly dimpled look in certain lighting it’s hardly noticeable. There are several demonstration videos on their website showing an iPod protected by the product being shaken around in a box of screws and having the edge of a car key scraped down it to try and scratch it. Not only is the iPod unscathed, the Invisible Shield plastic film doesn’t even have a mark on it.
Invisible Shield is available for the screens of a wide selection of gadgets including mobile phones, satnav units, cameras, mp3 players, laptops and more. There are even some versions that totally encase products like iPods.

I bought several Invisible Shields, one for the screen of my mobile phone, one for the screen of my digital SLR, one for the screen of my digital compact camera and one to entirely encase my iPod video.
Installation is quite straightforward. Ensure the gadget and your hands are completely clean and spray your finger tips, the gadget and the Invisible Shield (on both sides) with the included application fluid.
Apply the Invisible Shield to your gadget being careful to line it up as best you can before bringing it into contact with the surface. Start from one edge and carefully work your way across to the opposite edge trying not to get any air bubbles in it. If you get some minor bubbles there is an included plastic scraper to help you work them out from the middle of the gadget to an outside edge. It was actually fairly easy and due to the application fluid I didn’t get as many problems with bubbles as I have in the past with other sticky backed products. Getting it lined up properly can be awkward. If you haven’t quite got it on straight don’t press down on it, instead carefully peel it off and start again, respraying your fingers, the gadget and the Invisible Shield with the application fluid. As I had a few of these to apply I had thankfully bought a couple of extra bottles of the fluid (they don’t give you enough to allow for mistakes really).
Now my iPod lives in my pocket with my mobile phone and neither are in cases, plus I can now make use of my iPod dock without having to remove the iPod from its case.
The website has a good video explaining the product, and you can order directly from them (they do ship internationally). The 4 shields I bought came to £40 including shipping to the UK.
